A Brief History of Family Promise – Salt Lake

Family Promise – Salt Lake (FPSL) is one of 124 Family Promise affiliates (operating over 135 networks) around the country, but the only such program in the state of Utah. For twelve years, Family Promise – Salt Lake (formerly, Salt Lake Interfaith Hospitality Network) has served homeless families by providing hospitable shelter and all basic needs and has successfully transitioned 80% of families served to stable housing.

The first "interfaith hospitality network" was established in New Jersey in 1986 with the purpose of providing comprehensive support to families without homes. Family Promise – Salt Lake was created eight years later and was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1995. Today, 38 congregations work together to provide volunteers, accommodations and meals for 4 families (up to 18 individuals) at any given time. Over the course of a year, this network of congregations typically houses over 40 families.
